Failure to set these priorities & keep them straight will cause you frustration, depression, confusion, lack of achievement & eventually defeat in life that’s if stress doesn’t kill you first.
A person can become a “work-a-holic” by over committing himself financially, by making unrealistic plans, or simply by failing to realize a personal defect. Often he may use work as an escape mechanism. Thus he has to drive himself to the exclusion of what should be his priorities. It is most unfortunate that we deplore drug & alcoholic addicts but somehow promote & admire the work addict. We give him status & accept his estimate of himself & all the while his family may be getting so little of his time & energy that they hardly know him. Unfortunately for the work-a-holic, he has no home; his house is only a branch office.
He won’t take a vacation, can’t relax, dislikes weekends, waits for Monday & continues to make his load heavier by bringing more work on himself. Such a person also is usually defending against getting close to people. We have all heard of leaders of corporations & businesses who have given their wives everything materially, but nothing of themselves & thus come a divorce because the husband/father is only interested in work. But that hardly dissuades him. He reasons, I can always get another wife but where would I ever get a job like this one? Such tragedies abound in our nation. A person like this cannot remain successful, because sooner or later life will break down for him. His problem is his priorities; it is a matter of basic value being messed up.
