God’s goals for our lives

I believe God has specific goals for every Christian. Some are general, like being conformed to the image of Christ. Others are more specific, like the development of our particular spiritual gifts or a call to a particular service. God does have a plan for our lives.
>br> Having a tangible goal makes us put in that extra effort to reach it. To motivate, the goal must be measurable; it must be formulated in such a way that we will know whether or not we have reached it. We should set a target date for completing it or it will be put off. It must also be realistic lest we become discouraged. A motivational goal is a future event which can be accomplished & measured in time & by performance. A distinction should be made between long-range, yearly, monthly, weekly & daily goals. I recommend getting alone with God & pray about the goals you should set.

The key ingredients of effective goal setting are:-
  1. Make sure your goals are God’s Goals. Spend time in the word & prayer. Be willing to conform to God’s plan for your life.
  2. Write down your goals. Be specific. If it’s not in writing, it’s not a goal. An unwritten desire is only a pipedream that will probably never happen. If it’s in writing, it’s a commitment.
  3. Make sure your goals are measurable in time and performance. Be concrete. Schedule completion. If the goal is vague, you can never be certain when you’ve arrived. There’s no satisfaction in the accomplishment when goals are fuzzy.
  4. Be sure your goals are realistic. If you don’t believe that with God’s help you can achieve it, you won’t pay the price for it. Break life time goals into sub-goals (short, mid and long range).
  5. Be willing to change, modify, renew and update your goals as you grow. Your taste and your interests will change so give yourself some space to modify your goals.
  6. Keep your goals balanced- do not let them become lopsided where everything is geared up towards business and making money at the expense of your family or your spiritual life. Take time to enjoy your family now- make time for your wife now.
  7. Don’t share your goals with negative people or cynics. Share your goals with people who really care about you and want to help you. And make certain you take the advice of winners. Remember, misery loves company.

Success in business:

Failure to set these priorities & keep them straight will cause you frustration, depression, confusion, lack of achievement & eventually defeat in life that’s if stress doesn’t kill you first. A person can become a “work-a-holic” by over committing himself financially, by making unrealistic plans, or simply by failing to realize a personal defect. Often he may use work as an escape mechanism. Thus he has to drive himself to the exclusion of what should be his priorities. It is most unfortunate that we deplore drug & alcoholic addicts but somehow promote & admire the work addict. We give him status & accept his estimate of himself & all the while his family may be getting so little of his time & energy that they hardly know him. Unfortunately for the work-a-holic, he has no home; his house is only a branch office.

He won’t take a vacation, can’t relax, dislikes weekends, waits for Monday & continues to make his load heavier by bringing more work on himself. Such a person also is usually defending against getting close to people. We have all heard of leaders of corporations & businesses who have given their wives everything materially, but nothing of themselves & thus come a divorce because the husband/father is only interested in work. But that hardly dissuades him. He reasons, I can always get another wife but where would I ever get a job like this one? Such tragedies abound in our nation. A person like this cannot remain successful, because sooner or later life will break down for him. His problem is his priorities; it is a matter of basic value being messed up.
