The California coast was shrouded in fog that fourth July morning in 1952. Twenty-one miles to the west of Catalina Island a 34 year old woman began swimming toward California, determined to be the first woman to do so. Her name was Florence Chadwick. She had already been the first woman to swim the English Channel in both directions. The water was a numbing cold & the fog was so thick she could hardly see the escort boats. Millions were watching on national television. Several times, sharks had to be driven away with rifles to protect the lone figure in the water. Fatigue had never been her big problem in these swims- it was the bone chilling cold of these waters. More than 15 hours later, numb with cold, she asked to be taken out. She couldn’t go on, her mother & her trainer, & the boat alongside, told her the shore was near, they urged her not to quit, but when she looked towards the California coast all she could see was the dense fog, & she asked to be taken out. Hours later when her body began to thaw, she felt the shock of failure. She had been pulled out only half a meter from the California coast.
A reporter asked, “What was it Miss Chadwick that kept you from swimming the last half mile?”
“It was the fog” she replied. ”If I could have seen the l&, I could have made it. When you’re out there swimming & you can’t see your goal, you lose all sense of progress & you begin to give up.”
With no l& in sight her motivation was gone. It was the only time Florence Chadwick ever quit. Two months later she swam that same channel & beat the men’s record by two hours. She could see her goal. It is important in life to set sail towards specific goals.
Some Christians avoid goal setting because their pasts are strewed with unmet goals. They’re discouraged by failure. If you’re in this situation, it’s safe to assume your goals were not realistic. Having Gog-directed goals & plans are our keys to achievement, joy & personal success.
